Three volunteer Seattle medical professionals leave for Haiti on Friday, Sept. 3 to care for the ongoing health needs of the Haitian community. The team will coordinate medical care from the Medical Teams International field office in Port-au-Prince which opened after the disaster struck. The team will be in Haiti for two weeks.

Disease, hunger and homelessness are getting worse for 20 million Pakistanis following the most severe floods to ever hit the country. Medical Teams International continues to send medicines and supplies to the scene and will ship more in aid over the next few months. The total value of all shipments is worth more than $7.6 million.

Medical Teams International is responding to the recent disastrous flooding in Pakistan. They have shipped three containers of medical supplies to partners on the ground in the flood-affected area of the country. The medicines and supplies are enough to help hundreds of thousands of people and are valued at nearly $2 million.

Portland-based Medical Teams International has been awarded a $825,631 grant to continue their primary health care program in Nakivale Resettlement Camp in southwest Uganda. The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM) named Medical Teams International as the 12-month recipient of the grant.

On June 10, violence in Kyrgyzstan erupted between nationals and ethnic Uzbeks living in Kyrgyzstan. Since the onset of conflict, close to 300,000 Uzbeks residing in Kyrgyzstan have fled to neighboring Uzbekistan to seek protection.
To help refugees, Medical Teams International sent two Emergency Health Kits to Uzbekistan within the first days after the violence began. Two additional kits will leave next week and arrive in Uzbekistan on July 2. The four kits contain enough medicines and supplies to care for 40,000 people for three months and are valued at $1,684,000. Medicines include essential drugs and medical supplies recommended by the World Health Organization for disasters.

Medical Teams International today announced its new Washington state regional headquarters, currently in the design and construction phase, will be officially named the Medical Teams International Mike and Kathy Holmgren Center in honor of longtime volunteers and former Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren and his wife Kathy.

Medical Teams International is providing medical care and food for the Uzbekistan refugees – mostly women, children and the elderly. The Portland-based agency sent two Emergency Health Kits to Uzbekistan today to care for refugees. The kits contain enough medicines and supplies to care for 20,000 people for three months and are valued at $842,000.

Two 10-year-old girls, Bethlie Paul and Naika Etiene, barely survived Haiti’s devastating Jan. 12 earthquake. Today they escaped near-death and amputation of their severely-damaged legs when they were airlifted out of Haiti to San Antonio, TX. The two were saved thanks to Medical Teams International, local Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TV&R) paramedics, Dan Livengood of Salem, Ore., and Chad Ledson of Portland, Ore. and other aid agencies.

To our great sorrow, we have learned that Matthew Bouthillier, a Medical Teams International volunteer, died March 1 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
“We are shocked and saddened beyond words at this enormous loss,” said Bas Vanderzalm, president of Medical Teams International, who recently returned from Haiti. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt’s wife, Melissa, and his family, as well as our team in Haiti.”
